I have got to say that I am an avid Rex Hunt fan. I would willingly share a few beers with him and Bushy, Steve Starling and all the Aussy gang for bringing bright sunshine and superb sportfishing into my living room during our cold, dark winter days. Some of the tropical species that they catch on light spinning rods using plug and fly rod just leave me speechless, but what is a real giggle is the presumption that some of those fish actually want to be kissed before they are returned!! But to us “poms” the operative word is “returned”, there is a lesson in every episode for so many of us. I recently attended a small boat competition where more than one boat returned with a catch of Bass which truthfully were all over the legal limit, but not by much.It may well be that some of those guys maybe donít catch Bass often on their own patch, so the fact that they caught them at all was a novelty. So maybe that was the excuse, but it should not have been the reason why they kept so many, when so much work is being done to conserve and preserve the species.Anyway, back to “Sexy Rexy”. Have you ever watched a program and seen either him or Bushy turn a fish upside down in their hand and watch whilst the fish almost seems to go to sleep. In forty years of fishing I have never seen that before and what is more we tried it the other day on Bass and it worked like a dream. Turn the fish upside down and it virtually goes to sleepÖtake a look at the picture if you donít believe me.Holding the fish upside down we just slipped it back over the side and away it went as if nothing had happened. Slide your hand down the fishes back to collapse the spines, hold it still for a second or two and the fish will just become totally relaxed in your hand.
Try it, I will bet you will be as amazed as I was, but get the fish back in the water ASAP.
