“Martin began his lifelong angling interest at about the age 8 years during a family day out at Billericay Park, Essex. His first fish, caught on a one piece cane rod made up on the day was a gudgeon. He’s had a soft spot for them ever since! At 53 years Martin has fished for most if not all of the British freshwater fish though readily admits to a particular fondness for tench. Pike, barbel, chub and rudd (if only good rudd were more readily available) are never far behind and any carp that may come along is always appreciated. Martin’s first article (covering some local rudd fishing) was published by Peter Wheat, then Editor of Coarse Angler in April 1968 and he has written, reasonably frequently for the angling press ever since. He is author/co-author of 6 angling books. Martin’s coarse angling interests have always been of a specialist nature and specimen-sized fish the centre of many hours spent at the waterside. His keenness for angling is as strong today as it has ever been. Best fish include tench and barbel over 11 lbs, rudd, roach and perch over 2 lbs, bream and zander over 8 lbs, pike and carp over 30 lbs and 40 lbs respectively. Eels (never a favourite) and chub to over 5 lbs comprise a brief list of ‘personal bests’. A one-time President of the Pike Anglers Club of Great Britain, ditto a local angling society and a Vice President of the Specialist Anglers Alliance, Martin is, nonetheless not a political animal. |
