Often today many anglers are deluded into believing that unless you own all the latest tackle and take it all with you on every fishing trip that somehow this will work some modern day magic, thus enabling more fish to be cought. This of course is total rubbish, part of the marketing mantra that more is beautiful. In this instance more tackle and more weight will limit your mobility, encumbering your ability to up stakes and move on to pastures new if this one isnít fishing very well. Taking root in one place, erecting a bivvy and making with the bacon butties is fine for Cod fishing where the shoal of fish roam up and down the beach so that catching them is all about patience, waiting your turn for the shoal to turn up on your patch of the beach. If you want to catch Bass, Wrasse, Pollack, Plaice, mackerel and such species a good pair of hiking boots and the relevant Ordinance Survey map are essential items of tackle. It is sometimes quite easy to work out where the deep water is close in and reachable with a good cast. Places such as this will frequently reveal themselves as hotspots known only to the locals. But to get there will often require a yomp of maybe a mile or two along a coastal path and a scramble to get to the waters edge.

Make yourself comfortable when walking, take just the minimum of gear in a good bumbag with a Mars bar and a flask of fruit juice so that the walking is easy, the fresh salt air is just great and the exercise does you good. Who knows, you might even get to take a fish or two home as well.
