The Severn in particular has gone really patchy. Why? I’m not sure, but it must be something to do with the compensation water currently being let into the river. Okay there are a few big weights still coming out from a few of the noted swims but generally most anglers are struggling for a few fish in the matches I’ve been on. Right now I reckon the river would benefit from a real good flush through. It came up about eighteen inches this week but still sport has been slow. Last Saturday I fished the Earlswood bream lake, drew peg 40 and finished with 17.12.0 of skimmers and a few bream. Three thirty four-pound weights took the first three places but next day weights were even higher. My mate Ian Winter from Walsall took top spot with fifty pounds of bream from the peg I’d pre-baited the day before and loads of good backing weights followed. It all bodes well for this weekends Drennan Superleague match on both the bream and carp lakes. The format is such that all teams have got to nominate four anglers to fish each lake. Clearly the carp lake will dominate the overall places but I’m sure there will be some big bream weights too. It’s a match I’m really looking forward to, as my Starlets team is now seventeen points clear and a good result on this one will see us consolidate our position at the top.Last Sunday I went to Bridgnorth and drew just over the fence below the famous “channel”. After two and a half-biteless hours I decided enough was enough and packed up. Similar story on Wednesday at Bewdley. A big walk to peg 13 saw me on yet another struggler with just one chub in four hours fishing. Match winner was John Knight at peg 25 with 27lbs of barbel and one pike. I went down to have a look at how he was fishing it and was amazed just how close in he was catching. He was legering casters or meatballs just a couple of foot from the bank taking barbel up to seven pounds. I certainly learned something about the peg because there is no way I’d have fished so close without seeing it done. There are still a few dates left for my angling days on the Severn or local lakes. This week it’s Earlswood on Saturday, not sure where yet on Sunday and then all systems go for the last John Smiths weekend at Evesham. If you’ve never attended the weekend and you get the chance, get yourself there. It’s a really popular weekend with lots to see, do and buy. See you there!
