IF YOU HAVE A GOOD CATCH OR ANY NEWS E-MAIL ME martin@flyfish.demon.co.ukThis weeks “At The Waters Edge” programme on BBC Radio Lancashire at 7-30pm on Thursday evening will be from Swedish Lapland and the World Fly Fishing Championships. The programme includes interviews with England team captain Chris Ogborn and some of the team members. I also talk with a Swedish angler who has taken a brown trout of 20lbs on a dry fly from a still water that can be fished by anyone. More air time for angling programme The current “At The Waters Edge” programme on BBC Radio Lancashire Thursday evenings at 7-30pm produced and presented by Martin James Will also be broadcast on a Sunday at 5-30pm commencing September 23rd It will be a repeat of the previous Thursday evening’s programme. The BBC Radio Lancashire frequencies are 95.5 103.9 or 104.5 FMThankfully the cooler weather and rain has freshened up stillwater and rivers countrywide. Some good catches have been taken by anglers from the river Severn, Thames, Ouse and Kennet. The Hampshire Avon has produced what is thought to be a 14lb barbel. On the river Ribble some nice barbel have been caught from the lower reaches of the rive. Pellets meat and caster are the top three baits. We need a lot of rain in Lancashire and Yorkshire to give the rivers a good flush through. Thankfully last year we had a wet autumn winter and spring which has helped us through this dry spell of weather. Lets hope we have another wet autumn and winter this year. Coarse fishing newsArdleigh Reservoir The last couple of weeks have seen good sport for all anglers at Ardleigh. The pike anglers have been getting very good numbers of fish with some visitors reporting 9 fish. Best of the bunch so far was a 16 pounder. The bream anglers continue to get good catches. In addition to the bream, anglers have been getting tench to 6lb. and 5 big carp have also been captured at Noahs Ark. London angler Trevor Roberts had a dream fish when he visited the river Thames last Wednesday near Oxford. Using swimfeeder rig and three casters on a size 14 hook Trevor caught a super perch of 3lb 12 ounces. What an excellent fish. George Smith of Worcester fished the Teme with leger tackle and meat bait to catch nine barbel the best at 9lb 6ounces. Certainly a good catch of barbel. Big carp from Leeds and Liverpool canal Manchester angler Gerry Smyth fishing the Leeds and Liverpool for carp and ended a night session with two twenty pound plus fish and three other good doubles. Gerry had spotted the fish back in June and decided to have a long pre-baiting session before attempting to catch the big fish he had seen. Having baited up with Rickworth boilies every other night for some three weeks, He had to go away on business . On his return he baited for another couple of weeks. His first session didn’t produce a fish though he did spot them in his swim. Three nights later Gerry hit the jack pot taking fish of 23-12-0 22-0-0 19-8-0 18-0-0 and 16-0-0. If your looking for some good fishing at a venue that doesn’t get a lot of pressure Why not take a look at the Leeds and Liverpool canal. I have fished it on many occasions taking good tench, roach, perch, pike and carp over the years. Disinfectant Does anyone careWhat worries me is the amount of disinfectant being used and where is it going down the roadside drains into ditches, streams and rivers. Not only are the fish going to suffer but also all those riverside birds and lets not forget the swifts, swallows, martins and others that need a plentiful supply of insects. What puzzles me is why no one is asking questions about the effects of disinfectant. There is no mention in the press on the radio or television. I have written to my MP Nigel Evans asking him to get me some answers. I suggest all readers do the same. If we make enough noise we might get some answers The EA. don’t give us any answers. Many young children have been playing in the rivers and streams during the summer holidays what effect could this disinfectant have on them/ we need answers. Fly fishingGreat day for England finalists at Rutland Water which was on top form on Saturday for the English Loch-Style Final One hundred anglers who had battled through the qualifying rounds enjoyed exceptional sport in spite of the bright sunny conditions. The top 20 qualified to fish for their country next year and it took ten trout and 20lbs to be certain of a place in the team Local anglers were strongly tipped to take the individual trophy but it was Tiverton, Devon, expert John Gollop who netted the limit of ten trout averaging over 2lb-8oz each by early afternoon to finish ahead of Essex angler Neil Bailey was drawn with reigning Commonwealth Champion, Dave Shipman of Whittlesey, Peterborough as his boat partner and they both thought they were in with a chance when their boat was first back at the harbour at 3pm with a limit of ten trout each but were beaten by John’s slightly larger fish. Most of the 50 boats started towards the dam over the deepest part of the reservoir but gradually moved down the south arm in search of bigger fish. Biggest of the day was a five pound rainbow for Bob Handford of Bristol.
