I recently got a friend of mine’s lad into fishing and he loves it
Personally I love to introduce newcomers to my favourite sport as I get a lot of satisfaction out of seeing them do battle with their first ever fish. I recently got a friend of mine’s lad into fishing and he loves it. What was interesting was that he got probably more enjoyment out of catching loads of bleak on a three-metre whip from a flooded Severn than he did catching a few carp at Woodlands. The carp went up to six pounds in weight and they did battle well but the constant action of catching lots of small fished seemed to capture his imagination more. With this in mind, this week I introduced my girlfriend Joanne to the delights of angling. I thought about an out and out carp water but eventually settled for a day at a lake on a complex near to my new home called Wellfield Lakes. The complex is a credit to the owner Howard Guest. It’s well laid out, well stocked with a variety of fish and the general surroundings are very pleasant with lots of trees and shrubs. The lakes are only a short drive from Bewdley and I would recommend any angler to give the place a visit. So, how did our day go? Well, after all the usual trials and tribulations that any newcomer faces I have to say Jo did quite well, putting together a respectable catch of rudd, roach, perch and small carp, all on a seven metre pole. She enjoyed it, and wants to go back soon. I reckon I’ll need to put a padlock on my bait fridge soon!
On the match front, I went back to Woodlands again this week and could only muster up about seventeen pounds of small carp and tench from a corner peg. Unfortunately all the carp were up the other end of the lake! This week I’m off on a two-day assault on Earlswood lakes. I’m really looking forward to my first visit of the year there and I’ll let you know how things went next week.
