It proved to be a most unusual end to the season, especially for local star Dave Shipman and Bewl’s Ray Burt. The event as usual, was fished over two days. The second was to finish at 5.30pm. 53 of the 54 boats arrived back at the jetty at the correct time. But where was boat number 53? Dave Shipman and Ray Burt had tucked themselves away in Barnsdale Creek, and fished away – oblivious of the other boats charging back to the boat docks for the appointed time. It was only as the two of them set off back that they realised that they were the ONLY boat heading for home! It was then that the real truth sunk in. Amazingly, Dave’s catch of seven trout would have given him the overall title – to go with the one he won in the “Peregrine” earlier in the season. Ray had an even more fabulous catch – ELEVEN trout – these fish would have made a marked difference to the result. With no disqualifications, Fulling Mill Weald of Kent came out on top with 52 fish. In their team was overall best angler – Jeff Mason, who contributed 13 fish weighing 25lb 3_ oz. Dave Shipman’s team “Cormorants” still managed second place, with 46 fish weighing 96lb 2 _ oz. “New” team – Witcombe FFA managed a creditable third place.
