Fortunately this is the easiest of all the rings on a rod to replace, provided it hasn’t been done before by someone using epoxy or superglue. Professional rod builders always glue top eyes to the rod tip using a form of “hot melt” glue. Fuji make a small tube of hot melt glue in a container similar in shape and size to a woman’s lipstick container. The glue which it contains is almost identical to the hot melt glue used in the Bostic hot melt glue guns which so many of us use around the house for DIY woodworking and various odd jobs. I can assure you that a little dab of this hot melt glue fixes a top eye into place superbly well and it won’t come off till you are ready to take it off again. To get a worn or cracked top eye off all you have to do is gently run a sharp blade around the varnish where it butts up against the metal sleeve of the tip ring, being careful not to cut the blank. Then gently warm the metal sleeve with a small flame from a cigarette lighter and pull the ring off using a pair of pliers. Clean away the old glue, then check that the new ring will sit nicely on the tip of the rod. Apply a dob of molten glue and immediately push the new tip ring into place and check alignment with the other rings before the glue sets. When the glue has set trim away the excess glue and that is your tip ring fitted, the method is the same whether it be a boat rod, beach rod, fly rod or whatever.
