It got its name from the fact that the body cover was made from a gold coloured milk cap foil used to show that the milk came from a Jersey cow.This versatile fly can be fished either as a lure or as a nymph with either a floating or sinking line. It has certainly saved the day for me on several occasions and I always have a few in my fly box when sent out on a review.Although it works well for rainbows, it has the habit of producing more browns than most lures. I think this is because browns tend to be more discerning than the rainbows, who can be very impulsive. The Jersey Herd is in my opinion one of the more fishy looking lures which I believe accounts for its better performance with brown trout.

Materials

Originally this lure was tied on larger long shanked hooks but they can be tied on a whole range of long shank hooks ranging from size 4 down to size 12. I have also done well with them tied on size 10 and 12 standard shanked hooks.Black working silk body cover is wide copper coloured tinsel or gold lurex, under body is white gloss, natural peacock herl is used to make the tail, over body and head. The hackle is hot orange dyed cock hackle.

Instructions

1. Wind on several turns of working silk at the hook bend.2. Tie in about 10 strands of peacock herl at the bend leaving about .25 inch projecting to form the tail.3. Tie in the lurex or tinsel and floss.4. Wind on the working silk to about .25 inch from the hook eye.5. Wind on the floss to build up a fish-like under body and tie off with the working silk at the eye.6. Wind on the tinsel or lurex in tight turns to cover the under body. Tie off with the working silk.7. Bring the peacock herl forward to form a back to the fly and tie off.8. Tie in the hot orange cock hackle and wind on two full turns.9. Tie off hackle and trim off surplus10. Twist peacock herl ends and wind on in front of hackle to form a neat head.
