1 Lake

Special provision for the disabled.

SettingA former amenity lake in a part of Dumfriesshire with ancient historical connections opened in 1999 for coarse fishing. The site of the new fishery is part of the 19th C lake associated with the former Victorian mansion house at Dormont, near Lockerbie. Excavations in 1997 restored a body of water on about two acres with special wide solid piers built out into the water to give the disabled angler better access to the water margins. These provide the special facilities which Scotland so badly lacks for the wheel chaired angler and those with walking impairment. Support for the fishery has been given by The Committee for the Promotion of Angling for Disabled People (CPADP), a branch of Sportability Scotland and Angling Link which also promotes the joy of angling for the disabled.

Fish stock

Dormont Lake is stocked with carp tench, roach and perch and re-stocked for 2000. The carp and tench should appeal to the specialist angler looking for a sporting challenge, with roach and perch as a more “catchable” fish for the less serious angler.

Facilities

Access is via a private drive and car park suitable for cars and buses. There are disabled toilet facilities on site. The fishery is open from dawn to dusk 7 days a week during the period 1st April to 31st October. As there are only 20 piers, pre-booking is advised. The fishery is situated in mature landscape and ideal for both pleasure angling and for matches.

2000 season so far

The season has been a bit mixed so far, although some good fish have been caught. Mr Parkinson of Bolton-le-Sands had an excellent basket of tench (best fish 4lbs) and carp (best fish 5lbs) totalling 30lbs, all caught on maggot with a 10m pole. Local anglers David McMinn and Harry Bestwick have also enjoyed success, David with a basket of 5 carp (best fish 6lbs) totalling 30lbs all on sweetcorn, and Harry with some good perch up to 1 1/2 lbs and roach up to 2lbs. David lost 2 large carp each over 18lbs just as he was landing them (witnessed).
