It is a basic fact of life that often the best fishing is available in the most remote and lonely places, if you accept that fact, then being properly dressed in bright clothing and wearing good boots that will enable you to keep your footing is nothing more than common sense.Fashion footwear is great for your street cred, but if you have to walk three or four miles along a coastal path, scramble through some gorse then do a bit of rock-hopping to get to where you want to fish, then believe me when I say that fashion footwear is not what you want to be wearing. Leave your fancy trainers at home and get yourself a pair of hardwearing workboots or better still a pair of purpose made hiking boots.Barnacle encrusted rocks will soon scuff the fancy finishes away and the dried on salt water will soon make them look like a pair of fishing boots. But the ankle support for scrambling over the rocks and the excellent grip afforded by a deep cleated sole will soon make them an essential part of your fishing kit.Rockhopping is small skill which many anglers have developed to a fine art. They recognise the wet green weed which is as dangerous as walking on sheet ice, they know that wrack type weed will often conceal an ankle twisting gully, they know how to carry their gear so that there are no sudden swings and shifts to upset their equilibrium when they are climbing, but it is a joyous completely addictive style of fishing for those anglers who enjoy the walk.Treat your boots with leather oil or dubbin if you want to keep them supple. Salt water will make leather feel like cardboard if your boots are allowed to dry without treating them.
