I thought it would be easier to answer this question with pictures, so here goes:As you can see the groundbait I have made up is a very dark mix which we have just developed for use on commercial carp waters. It will be called ‘WHIZZO CARP FEED’ and consists of a blend of Dark Fish meal, Soya and a High protein crumb. The four photos show the reaction of the mix once in water Let’s face it most people only guess what’s going on under the surface But few really know and most probably don’t even care. How many of you buy a mix because you like the smell of it or because you have always used it and seem to do ok! In my opinion, anglers put more importance in how they look on the bank rather than put some real thought into their bait presentation. The clothing companies and luggage manufacturers must love those guys.So back to the pics, the first one shows CARP FEED mixed up with a little water ready to be introduced into a shallow bowl of water. Pic 2 shows the nuggets falling through the water and breaking up just under the surface; this initial cloud is perfect for attracting fish in the immediate area into the feed, but look what has happened in pic 3 after 1 minute. Most of the cloud particles have either dropped to the bottom or floated to the top, most of these floating particles will saturate with water and descend to the bottom quite quickly and after 4 minutes you can see that a very dense fine cloud of particles has appeared in the bottom 6′ of the bowl. In just 4 minutes we have created a perfect feeding environment for the fish and what’s more we have imitated a feeding cloud in our swim which will act like a magnet to progressively larger fish as the day goes on. So back to the question ‘Under what conditions would you use a dark groundbait?’ Firstly the conditions in most modern commercial Carp fisheries are pretty barren, most resemble stock ponds that are void of any real pond life or plants. But don’t think that this is the misinformed creation of mad farmers wanting to earn a crust from previously profitable dairy pasture, no, this is a carefully thought out input/output system that satisfies the modern Angler’s urge for Bigger Catches. Love em or hate em there here to stay! The bottoms of these fisheries will tend to be hard clay, so the chance of the fish stirring up a feeding cloud will be quite remote ( ENTER WHIZZO CARP FEED ) imagine a dense dark fishy cloud hovering 6′ from the bottom with loose offerings of meat and corn littering the area…THE ULTIMATE KILLING ZONE and a perfect way to camouflage your hookbait on hard days. In this environment you should be able to catch just off the bottom so your bait is always in front of the fishes noses. There are many other uses of dark groundbaits which I intend to cover in future articles.ALWAYS CHECK FISHERY RULES BEFORE YOU START THROWING IN GROUNDBAIT MOST FISHERY OWNERS ENFORCE A 1KG LIMIT.
