The Tufton Arms is situated in Appleby; a medieval market town set in the heart of the beautiful Eden Valley, which lies in a great loop of the River Eden.

A former 16th century coaching inn, the Hotel was completely refurbished in 1989 to evoke the Victorian era when theTufton Arms reached its present proportions.All twenty-one en suite bedrooms are individually furnished and decorated, with all the modern day comforts you would expect.

Step outside and the breathtakingly beautiful Eden Valley awaits you, unspoilt and tranquil. The nearby Lake District and North Yorkshire Moors are all within easy distance. There are a host of places to visit, and sporting activities to undertake.

Country houses, castles and galleries are just a few of the places to visit, with fell walking, pony trekking and golfing providing more energetic pastimes. Country pursuits of fly fishing and shooting can be arranged, with the Tufton Arms having access to some of the finest water on the River Eden, and it’s own driven and rough pheasant shoot.
The Lake District and North Yorkshire Moors are all within easy distance, making Appleby ideal for exploring the surrounding countryside
The Tufton Arms has access to some first class water on over 24 miles of the river, and can offer guests sea trout and salmon on the lower reaches and splendid wild brown trout above Appleby.
The Tufton Arms also has fishing on two picturesque tarns nestling in the Pennines, well stocked with Rainbows.
Fly fishing tuition courses
Why not try our Fishing Courses? The tutor for the course is John Pape, Appleby’s passionate practitioner of the sport! The courses run for four days and all tuition takes place on a fine stretch of the River Eden above Appleby. The courses are aimed at the beginner who has never fished before, and the more experienced fisherman who is seeking to brush up on certain aspects of his technique.The numbers on the course at any one time are limited to four to ensure you receive personal and individual attention.
How To Find Us
The Tufton Arms Hotel is situated in Appleby’s market square, in the centre of town. Appleby is bypassed by the A66 with Scotch Corner on the A1 37 miles away.
Located just off the M6, Appleby makes an ideal stopover destination. Junction 38 of the M6 is 14 miles away, and junction 40 only 13 miles. Penrith Railway station, (12 miles away), is on the Glasgow/London Euston main line.
