Anglers! Are you serious about your sport? Find out about Irelands’ North Western Region, the country’s premier game angling venue.
The North Western Regional Fisheries Board is probably Ireland’s premier game angling venue. It encompasses counties Mayo and Sligo and has a multitude of rivers and lakes most of which sustain very healthy populations of wild Salmon, Seatrout and Brown Trout. The most famous fishery in the region is, undoubtedly, the River Moy, which is generally reputed to be Ireland’s most prolific salmon river. It has a catchment area of over 2,000 square kms and an average annual rod catch of approximately 7,500 salmon. The world famous Ridge pool is only 200 m long yet has produced over 2,500 salmon in one season. There is a huge variety of salmon and seatrout angling available throughout the Moy catchment fromas little as £10 to £110 per day.The Regions best wild brown trout fisheries are Loughs Conn and Cullin, which cover an area of over 14,000 acres. Superb sport can be had from March through to September using either traditional wet fly techniques or dry flies & nymphs. Fish of 4 to 5 lbs are common throughout the season. The beautiful Lough Arrow is another substantial brown trout Lough in theNW region which is famous for the quality of its trout fishing particularly around Mayfly time. There are many more unspoiled rivers and lakes in the region which offer a huge variety of game angling, on smaller loughs, spate rivers and rich limestone streams.
